I just realized that I went the whole winter without posting this session from last year. Shooting senior guys can be a challenge sometimes. They tend to not like to smile or do anything goofy. Michael was a champ though, and I really enjoyed working with him throughout the day.

Las Vegas Desert shoot

In my last post about traveling to Las Vegas for the WPPI conference, I mentioned going out into the desert for an impromptu shoot. Rather than letting those images get lots within all the other pictures from the four days, I decided to split them up into their own post.

These are some of my favorite images from the two hours we were out on the flats.

A week ago I attended WPPI for the 2nd time. It’s basically a huge photography convention with classes, a trade show, and lots of parties. Last year was awesome, but the thing that made this year especially cool for me was getting to hang out with my interstate and international friends for much longer. We even rented a car, had some models come to town, and drove out into the desert for an impromptu shoot.

I love this pizza place at the MGM! Honestly, the pizza itself isn’t amazing or anything, but it’s still good food, and it’s cheap (comparatively speaking).

Every time I shoot my first engagement session of the year, I always feel like the pressure is on. I feel like I’ve gotten rusty every new year, no matter how long or short of a time it’s been since I shot last.
It was such a pleasure to shoot these two though. They were real troopers considering the cold wind, as well as the fairly rough nature hike I took them on to get to a few special spots I discovered on my “location scouting” missions I’ve started taking. There were so many times today, that I started saying, “Why don’t you…” and before I said anything, they were pretty much doing what I was going to direct them to do anyway. I felt like I was cheating to get shots this awesome.

I was really excited when Sara got a hold of me for shooting her wedding. Sara and I have known each other for 20 something years- back when we went to elementary school together. It was great to reconnect in person, and share in their fun on this warm day.

Elise wanted to split her session into two, so she could shoot one session in the changing leaves, and another in the historic Nebraska State Capitol building. How could I refuse anyone with such an awesome smile!

I loved how this session… or both these sessions, rather… turned out.

The second half of this session was also my first attempt at processing a full set of pictures using the excellent new VSCO toolset for Adobe Lightroom.

This engagement session was definitely one of my all time favorites! Katie wanted to stop and take some pictures out at the farm she grew up on, which included an old barn. We didn’t spend too much time inside, as it looked like one small nudge would knock the whole thing over, but we used it as much as we could.

Not to mention that these two were all smiles and laughs!
